Zio Carlo
Zio Carlo was my mother’s older brother. She had often told me the story of their changes in fortune when their father had died over 40 years ago, after having succumbed to the virulent fever which had swept through Cremona that winter. As the eldest of five, Zio Carlo had expected his father to train him as a cobbler, and that when the time was right, he would take over his father’s business.
